Donald W. Halt, age 82, of Edison, died early Friday morning at the Woodside Village Care Center following an extended illness. He was born near Cardington on June 17, 1925, the son of the late Oscar A. and Estella M. (Pfeifer) Halt. Don graduated from Edison High School. On November 20, 1944, Don joined the U.S. Army and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre of Operations in Korea for 11 months during World War II, operating jeeps and hauling personnel and rations. A lifelong resident of Morrow County, Don worked as a machinist at the H.P.M. Corporation for 43 years until he retired in 1990. Don was a lifelong member of the Edison United Methodist Church, and was a member of the V.F.W. Post 8054 of Mount Gilead. Despite being a hard working man, Don always found ample time for his family. An avid sports fan, Don loved to cheer for his beloved Ohio State University basketball team, and was annually glued to the tv during March Madness. With a green thumb, Don enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden.Kind, gentle, and soft spoken, Don never spoke a cruel word to anyone. A loving husband, Don placed the needs of his family and his wives before his own. His favorite times in life were spent surrounded by his family. Donald will be missed by his three sons: Timothy W. (Linda) Halt of Mount Vernon, Thomas A. (Karen) Halt of Ashley, Bryan E. (Karen) Halt of Greer, South Carolina; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren; and by his sister: Gerry Mosher of Mount Gilead. He was preceded in death by his first wife: Esther Marie Lust on October 10, 1979; second wife: Elizabeth Ann Bernard on December 21, 2005; and by his brother: William Halt. The family will greet friends on Monday from 5 – 8 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 North Main Street, Mount Gilead, where funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Don Lockwood officiating. Burial with military honors provided by the V.F.W. Post 8054 and AmVets Post 87 will follow at Claridon Cemetery. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Edison United Methodist Church, 335 South Boundary St., Edison, Ohio 43320, or to the American Cancer Society, 870 Michigan Avenue, Columbus, Ohio 43215.
